Western Rams back in top paddock

Western Rugby League will enter the senior AAMI Country Rugby League Tier 1 Championships in 2013.

The decision to return to tier one came following a Western General meeting, conducted at Wellington Soldiers Club this week.

It will be the first time Western Rams have fielded a senior outfit since 2009, with Groups 10, 11 and Castlereagh League opting to enter the Tier 2 Group championship over the past three seasons.

Group 10 and 11 remain committed to the Tier 2 Group structure, but will adopt a youth policy, selecting under 23 players as a development initiative for younger grade players.

“The Western Rams senior team will showcase our best players from the Region’s senior competitions, with Group 10 and 11 focussing on youth development in their Tier 2 teams,” said Regional Chairman Peter McDonald.

The Region is mindful of extra burden a representative season has on clubs and local competitions, an extra general bye is likely to be included in the calendar to cater for the heavier schedule.

The hunt has begun to find an appropriate mentor to lead Western’s charge, the region calling for expressions of interest for coaches.

Western last won the senior title in 2004 under the guidance of the late Dave Scott as coach.
